What is UFile?
UFile is a Web-based tax preparation application designed by Dr Tax-UFile.ca Inc., a Canadian company based in Montreal, Quebec. UFile's tax engine was created originally for professional tax preparation specialists. UFile has the same powerful engine and a friendly, interview-based interface so that anyone can have access to this advanced tax preparation system.

Who should use UFile?
UFile is for taxpayers who prepare their own income tax returns, who want to spend less time and money doing it, and who enjoy the convenience of the Internet.

If you prepare your own tax return without the help of a professional tax preparer, and you have Internet access, simply go to UFile.ca to prepare your tax return online. You can file it electronically or print it and file it on paper, as you prefer.

As a Web-based tax preparation system, UFile.ca, provides taxpayers with continual access to their tax information and ensures the security and backup of their data.

UFile is not intended for use by tax professionals or anyone being paid for the service of tax return preparation.

UFile has very few restrictions as to the types of returns it can process. See the next question for more information.

Is UFile easy to use?
You already know how to answer questions on a Web site and how to fill out simple electronic forms. That's all there is to using UFile.

If you have that covered, then all you need is to have all relevant tax information at hand. UFile's interview will guide you by presenting questions that you will answer and forms that you will fill in.

In a frame located on the left-hand side of the screen, a table of contents will display your customized interview and enable you to recall any question or form and add to or change what you have previously entered.

If you will be preparing the tax returns of family members, keep in mind that each person's tax information must be entered in their respective file. UFile will optimize the family's data to minimize the tax payable and maximize your refund.

When can I use UFile?
You can log onto UFile.ca to prepare your tax returns online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

However, the UFile.ca site may occasionally be unavailable for maintenance purposes. In such a case, the affected hours of operation will be posted.

Do I really need to file a tax return?
If any of these scenarios apply to you or members of your family be sure to file a tax return:

1. You have income from which tax has been deducted. The tax deducted can be refunded if the income is under the personal credit amount of $9600.
2. You may be entitled to the new Working Income Tax Benefit, a refundable tax credit designed to provide tax relief for eligible low-income individuals and families who are re-entering the workforce.
3. As an employed person help increase your RRSP contribution room by filing a tax return. This may not seem important now but will allow valuable RRSP deductions in the future.
4. Your senior parents should file in order to claim the Provincial Tax Credits and to register their incomes for the sake of the Old Age Pension supplement.
5. In Ontario, students over 16 may also be entitled to the $100.00 Sales Tax credit if you cannot claim them on your Ontario Credit Schedule and have not received the Child Tax Benefit for this student.
6. Anyone 18 or older should file to ensure they apply for the GST credit regardless of having little or no income.
7. Finally, anyone applying for loans or bursaries in the coming year may be asked to provide their tax returns as proof of income.

Can I prepare any type of returns with UFile?
UFile is designed to prepare just about any tax return. However, if yours is a complex tax return and you feel that you do not have sufficient expertise, it may be wise to consult a professional to guide you.

This being said, the general restrictions currently applicable are listed below. You cannot use UFile if:

• you are required to file any type of bankruptcy return;

• you changed the fiscal year-end of your business;

• You are reporting Harmonized Agristability/Agri-Invest (T1273)

We regret any inconvenience that this may cause.

Note that UFile does not set any restrictions on the electronic filing of tax returns to the CRA or Revenu Québec. Any such restrictions are imposed solely by the NETFILE authority.

What supporting documents do I need when using UFile?
You should have all the tax documents you would normally need to prepare your tax return manually on paper or with any commercial software. This includes your information slips and all receipts you intend to submit.

If, however, you begin preparing your tax return with UFile, then realize that you are missing certain information, you can always quit and come back later to finish preparing your return. UFile always saves your data as you proceed through its tax preparation sequence.

How can I use UFile if I don't have a computer?
You can use UFile on any computer with Internet access, whether it's at a friend's, at the library, or at an Internet café.

How do I get assistance if I need it?
Read the questions carefully. If you require assistance, several options are available depending on the nature of your query.
